- A Mysterious Door
10 years
John’s stomach turned as he arrived at his Uncle Jonathon’s manor. It had been years since he had walked through the pale, black gates and into the horrendously enormous house. Even walking down the stone path posed a challenge for John, for the last time he did was with his father, who had died recently in the black Friday bushfires in Victoria whilst on a business trip which, if he had not been killed, would’ve helped his family recover from the scars of the Great Depression. John carefully went up the five oak steps, rang the doorbell made from ivory and waited impatiently. After about 30 seconds or so, the doorknob twisted and there in front of John stood his Uncle Jonathon, his fat belly sticking out and his pocket watch glittering in the reflection of the evening sun.
“John!” Uncle Jonathen exclaimed as he picked him up and spun John around, nearly suffocating him.
“Come on in. I’ve got dinner ready and I’ve also set up your bedroom”.
Uncle Jonathon was one of the few people in Newcastle and NSW to have a secure job as well as dwelling that you owned. A few days after John’s arrival he started to settle in, exploring all the nooks and crannies of his Uncle Jonathon’s manor. However, one day at dinner Uncle Jonathon explained that this house once belonged to a mad warlock, who created spells and enchantments which he used on his animal test subjects and doors around the houses which led to distant worlds and into the past. Uncle Jonathon explained that he had destroyed most of the doors which had spells on them with the help of his father, but could not consume one of the most powerful doors he created. Uncle Jonathon made John promise he would never even touch the door for as long as he stayed here. The next morning John crept out of bed as silently as possible, carefully walking across the corridor and soon arriving at the door his Uncle Jonathon had forbidden him from. Ever since Uncle Jonathon had told John about the forbidden door, he had the urge to open it, and now no one could stop him from twisting the golden doorknob. John screamed as a million objects fell onto him, as if they were eating his legs. However, they were very smooth, and he then realized they were potatoes from a potato farm which was behind the door! But suddenly the ground started shaking, shaking all the potatoes. John thought he was going to get buried alive when a furry hand touched him……..
