- The Cactus With a Note (Inspired By Adelyn's Artwork)
12
Session:
Before I leave for school, every day I take a glimpse at the cactus. I look at it, wondering why it’s there. Then, one day, I see a note. I rip the note off and run to school.
The whole day, I waited just to open the note. I close the door behind me. My whole room feels tense. I slowly open the note. Inside it says, “Find me on the other side of the river where no one dares to venture”. I turn the note around. It was written by E. “Who is E?”, I thought.
I wake up the next day to find another note on the cactus. I go back home and rip it open. “Find me on the other side of the river where no one dares to venture”, again? I turn the note around. As expected from E. I decide since I don’t have school to go past the river and see who E is.
I walk out of my home feeling scared, worried and a bit nauseous. As I tread dreadfully towards the river, I remember that there is no bridge so there was no possible way of crossing the river. Unless E wants me to make a bridge myself. I look at the cactus. Almost Two days ago it was just a boring, old, misplaced cactus and now it was practically acting as a letterbox for notes from E. I look back at the river and realised there was a perfectly built bridge in front of me that wasn’t there before.
I put one foot onto the bridge, as if I was checking if it was stable enough, then the other. As I walked across the bridge I cautiously held onto the rope handrail until I reached solid ground.
I looked around the unexplored area past the river, or as E likes to call it “the other side of the river where no one dares to venture”. No one was there. No mysterious figure, no person who no ones ever seen. Just trees, forest and a lot of spooky vibes. I look back at the bridge, then at the forest, then at the bridge again. I cross the bridge and trudge back into my house feeling a little disappointed.
I wake up the next morning and start getting ready to go to my friend’s house but then, a sudden urge comes over me to check the cactus before leaving.
I run to the cactus and find a note on it, as usual. I pluck it of and open it. I expect it to say, “Find me on the other side of the river where no one dares to venture” but instead it says, “Help me. Please.” I stutter. My brain racing with thoughts. E is in danger and there is only one person to save her. I pull out my phone and text my friend that I won’t be coming to her place and that I have an emergency.
I race across the bridge without a second of hesitation and ran straight into the forest. Not that far in I found a small cottage. I walked toward it, feeling a pang of nervousness. I slowly pry open the cottage door and creep in. there on the bed I find a frail looking woman and I can’t help but ask if she is E. She tells me yes and makes me sit down next to her.
“I am the Guardian of the world. E is the name I adopted.”, she said.
“But why where you sending me letters?”, I ask.
“Because I am dying. I have served this galaxy for a thousand years but now my time to pass the magic of the universe has come. I have no relatives, no children to pass the power onto. So, then I thought, why don’t I give the power to the people that live near the River of Secrets.”
“The River of Secrets?”
“Yes, now hush child. As I was saying I have very little time left and I must pass on the power or your world will collapse. Are you ready to take on the power? There is really nothing to do you just have to tell no one about your power and the magic will do the magic.”
“If it means my home ending, okay I will do it.”
“Okay dear, prepare yourself. I move the magic gifted to me by the Galaxies to you my dear.”
I ended up in my room after that not knowing how. But all I know is E is gone and I am still a normal student just with powers that are holding Earth together.
